The Medical Dictionary

The Dictionary of Medical Science is an example of the TermFlower used within the subject area medicine and medical science and the languages Danish and English. The users come from e.g. educations within medical science, the IT industry, translation companies, patent agencies and the pharmaceutical and medical industries.

"The Dictionary of Medical Science has given us a unique opportunity of creating a translation platform"
Randi Mørck, Pfizer

The core of the Dictionary of Medical Science originally consisted of the entries from Gyldendal publishers' Medical-Dental Dictionary (Danish-English-Danish). Connected with the entry terms were definitions, comments, translations and examples written by the dictionary's editors Professor and MA in English Morten Pilegaard and Senior lecturer and MA in Medicine Helge Baden.

The original core is no longer easily spotted in the Dictionary of Medical Science. A large number of users from IT companies, pharmaceutical companies, translations companies and research centres have added entries to such a degree that the Dictionary of Medical Science can be said to be an original result of the meeting between users from many corners of the medical and health area.

The internal works of reference render it possible for e.g. IT companies working with the electronic patient record, to connect the medical linguistic knowledge they gain access to, via the Dictionary of Medical Science to their own technological terminology. This creates a brand new product, without which their work would be much more difficult. Translation companies benefit from the knowledge they get from the pharmaceutical industry so that their translations become consistent and accurate, and in return, the pharmaceutical industry's communication departments benefit from the knowledge supplied by the translation companies. The research centres, whether within medicine or language, gain an invaluable insight into practice and in return keep the companies updated with new initiatives and results from the research environment.

"Our employees use the Dictionary of Medical Science daily for reference and inspiration"
