Efficient knowledge sharing sets out the organisation's experience-based or 'silent' knowledge explicitly. This explicit knowledge holds a special place in KCL's products. Rather than being solely a question of the organisation's internal resource distribution, the practical knowledge is centrally located and is treated on par with the universities' theoretical knowledge. Thus, a potentially fruitful meeting between theory and practice is created: the companies gain access to new knowledge from the research, and the universities gain access to knowledge as it behaves in context and as it is used in practice.

Knowledge sharing is a barter deal, not a surrender of power. Traditionally, knowledge sharing has been viewed as a one-way process between the person/organisation possessing knowledge and person/organisation receiving knowledge. This entails that companies have been cautious with 'outhouse knowledge sharing'. Because why give potential competitors knowledge that is seen as valuable by the company itself? If, on the other hand, knowledge sharing is perceived as a two-way process, it is indeed possible to protect the company against opportunistic behaviour. In our ICT tools, a guiding principle behind the design has been the barter deal: each participant adds a bit of his/her knowledge and in return receives access to the other participants' joint amount of knowledge. As a participant, you give a little, but receive a lot.
Knowledge sharing is about identifying the knowledge already present in the company, making it accessible and applying it to concrete tasks which are subsequently solved in a better, faster and cheaper way. In addition, knowledge sharing is about exchanging this knowledge for new knowledge from outside the company and thus reducing the resource consumption and raising the quality of the output.
Consistent terminology, efficient communication and resource saving information and communication technology are of great significance – in particular in industries marked by international competition. The organisation must communicate as one unit, and this demands management of the internal terminology and a language policy taking into consideration that the employees may work at many different levels in the organisation. Our tools make it easy to establish the homogeneity in the linguistic output required by an efficient organisation today: e.g. trade and industry specific concept definitions, authorised technical terminology, approved variables and well-established translations. In the organisation's own work of reference in our tools, any concept whatsoever may be added as long as it is approved as relevant by the organisation's text administrator.
