Audacity is a free open source application for recording and editing audio.
It can record system audio from Windows directly, for Mac it needs an additional application called Sunflower which is not supported on Apple Silicon-based machines (M1, M2, etc.). Mac users can find directions and a link to the additional software on Audacity Support's "Recording desktop audio" page by going to the "macOS" tab under "1 Select the loopback device".
For recording system audio, Mac users may consider using the built-in Quicktime application on macOS instead.
