The larynx is an articulator, just as the tongue is an articulator in the oral vocal tract. To understand the range of sounds produced in the laryngeal vocal tract, we will observe laryngoscopic videos of laryngeal articulations and hear video/audio examples of many actors, singers, and public personalities whose voices illustrate each parameter. The oral vocal tract is replete with postures of the tongue, jaw, lips and velopharyngeal port that create auditory qualities that we recognize in voice quality. Each parameter will be isolated in the voices of speakers of various languages, and the role of voice quality in phonology and in sound change will be discussed.
Participation is free and open to all. The talk is organized by the Centre of Voice Studies and Sounds of Language and Speech with financial support from Aarhus University research programs for Language and Communication and for Arts, Aesthetics, and Communities.
