Digital Aesthetics and Environmental Damage: From Scale to Data to Surface

This talk addresses the intersection of digital aesthetics with environmental data. Building on my earlier work on geologies of media and design, material cultures of digital aesthetics, and environmental arts, I propose to engage with the broader question of how we perceive, image, and relate to data. In other words, if one of the most crucial questions of our age is about how to understand, and operate based on abstractions (such as climate and capitalism), how do we conceive operative approaches that are concrete enough to translate into meaningful contexts of accountability in relation to human agency and yet, can shift from human scale to different realms of spatio-temporal, digital and computational, and epistemic as well as aesthetic coordinates? This talk addresses this theme in the broader context of critical posthumanities but pays specific attention to ideas that are emerging in the project Design and Aesthetics for Environmental Data (AUFF, 2022-2024) which also guides some emerging work presented in this talk. In this manner, I propose elements for a research agenda of environmental data: one that addresses environmental data in landscapes, situations, archives, and other material contexts while, in a recursive manner, defining  those sites, situations, landscapes, across different scales.
