Romane Marcon's research focuses on the X’s way, or way-construction, which expresses movement of the subject referent along a path expressed to the right of way, and its uses in specialized discourse, namely diet and nutrition books. The construction has been described as a “syntax-semantics mismatch” (Jackendoff 1990) as it entails movement, but the verb used is often not related to motion. Different studies have explored this “mismatch” but some aspects of the construction remain unclear. I will show that there are disagreements on the categorization of the path as resultative or directional, then I will consider the semantic and syntactic constraints on the construction, including the syntax of to the right of “way”. In terms of methodology, I claim that looking at naturally occurring data brings more results than fabricated examples. My aim is to produce quantitative and qualitative data on the use of the construction and understand the pragmatic effects created in context which may convince the reader to follow the advice developed in diet books.
