Enjoyment and Anxiety in Teaching Chinese in Nordic Countries: A Qualitative Content Analysis of Teacher Psychology

The psychology of language teachers is a relatively underexplored area of research in applied linguistics, though its significant impacts on language learners’ motivations and academic achievement are widely recognized. In Nordic countries, Chinese language is offered as a degree programme at many universities as well as an elective foreign language in public schools. This study aims to examine the experiences of enjoyment and anxiety among Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) teachers in Norway. First, an overview of the existing study on foreign language teachers’ psychology and emotions is provided. Then, reflexive essays from seven native Chinese language teachers across different educational levels and institutions in Norway are analyzed using qualitative content analysis approach. The findings indicate that the positive emotions of CFL teachers are predominantly derived from witnessing student progress, receiving student appreciation, and achieving work-life balance. In contrast, their negative emotions are associated with challenges in learner motivation and engagement, cultural differences, and the evolving sociopolitical landscape. In terms of identity construction, CFL teachers often perceive themselves as cultural ambassadors and bridge-builders in their teaching practices. This study enhances the understanding of CFL teacher psychology and identity in the context of teaching Chinese in a Nordic environment and offers implications for teaching research in foreign language education.
