I am researching how dyslexia affects speakers of West Greenlandic. Because of the significant influence that language has on dyslexia, it is necessary to study dyslexia in languages that are as typologically diverse as possible. Polysynthetic languages are notoriously underrepresented in linguistic research, even though this language type exists on most continents. An example of polysynthetic language is West Greenlandic.
By examining dyslexia through a Greenlandic “lens,” I aim to investigate whether our understanding of what defines dyslexia should be revised. In addition, I will create a corpus consisting of texts produced by native speakers of West Greenlandic, which will ultimately enable the development of IT assistive technologies for West Greenlandic speakers with dyslexia.
