I am an artist, musician and researcher working across music, writing, performance and the moving image. Operating as theories, fictions or framing devices, my works draw on my experiences as a musician alongside methods from critical theory, cultural studies and infrastructural critique, re-staging the techniques of the cultural industries in an “immanent critique” of pop. Key to this is an investment in questions concerning the mediation, standardisation and reproduction of artistic personality.
My works make visible the economic, social and affective logics underpinning seemingly smooth or spectacular media systems, transforming the languages and aesthetics of pop into objects of reflection and critique. I engage technologies including microphones, speakers, synthesisers, drum machines and digital watches as active participants, tracing the histories of fidelity, economy and models of desire that these technologies programme or manifest. Recent work extends these questions from popular music and music-video towards platformed performance and the technological organisation of personality.
I am currently a postdoctoral researcher in Art History, Aesthetics & Culture and Museology at Aarhus University. My project, Operational Personalities: Life-Casting, Livestream Labour, and the Choreography of Algorithmic Subjectivity (2026–28), is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s Mads Øvlisen programme and examines how platform interfaces, algorithmic instructions and economic incentives choreograph personality, voice, gesture, attention and desire.
From 2025–26 I was Artist-in-Residence Fellow at the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS), where I developed Machine-Characters with Jan Løhmann Stephensen. Through experiments with actors, voice, gesture and programmable camera systems, the project examined platformed subjectivity and algorithmic choreography and included the development of the multi-channel moving-image work Performance / Studies.
I completed a practice-led PhD in Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, in 2023. Figures of Capital: Music-Video as Immanent Critique traces the history of global music-video from MTV through YouTube and contemporary platform culture, examining transformations in the political economy of popular music and contemporary art. The research was presented through the solo exhibitions Labour’s Own Sounding Ideal at Pump House Gallery (2019) and An Endless Archive at San Mei Gallery (2023), alongside works including Sleeping Lions, Ella, Science and Technology and Baby-G. It is currently being developed into a monograph.
Alongside my individual research, I co-run Her-Modulo with Dr Rachael Finney at London College of Communication, an artistic research and publishing project concerned with sound technologies, listening cultures, redundant media and audio publication. Developed through my research/production residency at TACO! in London, Her-Modulo operates across performance, public events, broadcast, recording and publishing, with contributors including Anna Barham, Louis Moreno and Paul Rekret.
Collective study, exhibition-making and artist-led organisation are longstanding parts of my practice. From 2018–21 I was a Resident Artist at Somerset House Studios and worked with Common Study, co-facilitating seminars, reading groups, screenings, performances and workshops. I was previously an Associate Artist at Open School East (2016–17) and am currently part of ÆSKEN, an artist-run exhibition space in Aarhus.
My work has been presented at San Mei Gallery, Pump House Gallery, LUX Artist Moving Image Festival, South London Gallery, Glasgow International, Somerset House, Jerwood Space, Chapter Arts Centre, Café OTO, Q-O2/La Monnaie De Munt, Filmhuis Cavia and BBC Tectonics Festival. My research has been presented at the European Artistic Research Network, Sonoridades Fronteiriças, Marxism in Culture, London College of Communication and Goldsmiths. I have also curated public programmes and produced sound works and radio essays for Radiophrenia and Threads Radio. Writing about my work has appeared in The Wire, The Quietus, Art Monthly, ArtReview and BBC Culture.
My practice develops from a longer history as a musician and performer working across music, film, theatre and contemporary art. With Conquering Animal Sound I released music through Chemikal Underground and toured extensively across the UK and Europe, including Steirischer Herbst, Botanique, Vooruit and the ICA. I have taught art, music, sound and audio-visual practice at Goldsmiths, the Slade School of Fine Art, the University of Westminster and the University of Greenwich.
