Translatio imperii and The End(s) of History: The Imperial theme in La Numancia reconsidered
In this work-in-progress-talk I want to present an analysis/discussion of the imperial theme in Miguel de Cervantes’ drama El Cerco de Numancia (The Siege of Numancia, c. 1585). I argue that Cervantes’ play can be read as a critique of the notion of translation imperii – the continuous (westward) transfer or supercession of imperial authority from antiquity – vis á vis the decline of the Spanish Habsburg Empire.
