New Carlsberg Foundation: PhD fellowships

PROCESS AT THE SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE, ARTS – Aarhus University 2024

The New Carlsberg Foundation awards PhD fellowships to art research projects in the broadest sense that are relevant to the work of the museum or exhibition venue applying for funding. This includes traditional art historical or art theoretical research associated with collections, but may also cover other areas relevant to the institution’s activities in society in general: strategy, curation, marketing, communication and dissemination.

The museum or exhibition venue serves as the applicant and will receive the funding from the New Carlsberg Foundation, if granted. An accommodation agreement from the university must be attached to the application. If funding is granted, a collaboration agreement will be concluded between the institution and the university, stating, among other things, that the PhD student is enrolled in the university’s graduate school. As a general rule, the place of employment is also Aarhus University.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

  • Send 1) a preliminary project description, 2) the name of the proposed principal supervisor at the department and 3) a draft budget (see standard budget outline here) to research consultant Lise Marie Andersen (lmand@cc.au.dk) by 23 August 2024. The research consultant will forward the description to the relevant head of department for their assessment of the academic relevance and anchoring of the project.
  • If the project involves a PhD candidate specified by name, the PhD candidate must be prequalified by the graduate school, and you must therefore send 1) the project description, 2) the candidate’s CV, 3) transcripts of records and diplomas and 4) documentation of English language skills equivalent to English at B level in Danish upper secondary school to the research consultant.
  • If a PhD candidate not specified by name is to be employed at the university, you should be aware that the graduate school has two fixed recruitment rounds per year. Read more here: https://phd.arts.au.dk/academic-staff/call-deadlines-for-grant-holders (see under “Deadlines”). If the university has approved the appointment of a candidate not specified by name at the museum, the museum itself is responsible for creating a job advertisement, and the applicants must be approved by the graduate school.
  • As soon as the head of department has approved the project’s academic relevance to the school, and the graduate school has pre-approved the PhD candidate, the research consultant draws up an accommodation agreement for the applicant on behalf of the School of Communication and Culture, which can be attached to the application.

FOLLOWING PRELIMINARY APPROVAL FROM THE NEW CARLSBERG FOUNDATION:

  • If the museum/exhibition venue receives a preliminary approval for a grant, please send the grant letter to research consultant Lise Marie Andersen (lmand@cc.au.dk) with a view to initiating the further process. In this connection, note that the above is part of the university’s internal process, whereas the New Carlsberg Foundation works with “model 1” and “model 2”, which are not to be finally decided on until preliminary approval has been granted.
