Info about event

Time

Wednesday 20 April 2016,  at 19:00 - 21:00

NB! Oona Frawley has cancelled owing to illness

The year 2016 marks the centenary of the Easter Rising, which gave impetus to the break from Great Britain, an event which still very much shapes Irish identity. More recently, the financial crisis in 2008 had a deep impact on the Ireland we know today.

Among other things, the interview will be based on the span between these events and focus on the relationship between literature and the past and present. Both Donal Ryan and Oona Frawley have been mentioned in connection with a new wave of authorships which is called "recession lit".

Donal Ryan's debut Rust won the Guardian First Book Award in the UK in 2013. The novel takes place in an Irish village after the financial crisis and explains how things and people fall apart as a consequence of the crisis.

Oona Frawley's much acclaimed novel Flight places the focus on Ireland’s emigration history and how the country is tackling the new flow of immigrants entering the country today.
