Nordic Noir: Scandinavian crime series, melancholy and the international success

Info about event

Time

Friday 7 October 2016,  at 14:00 - 16:00

The concept of Nordic noir is internationally recognized among audiences, fan communities and media industry partners as a specific trademark. In this context, The Killing (2007-12) and The Bridge (2011-15) hold a special status as series that define the implications of Nordic noir.

The specific elements that constitute the Scandinavian crime and the Nordic noir ambience are described as
a) complex characters and gender issues, i.e. powerful woman, feminized male antiheros, social and emotional dysfunctional female genies,
b) societal criticism and engagement, i.e. the Nordic welfare system, and
c) a particular use of the Nordic settings, including landscape, lighting, climate, design and architecture.

Melancholy is displayed in all three of these elements.
The lecture will describe Nordic Noir as in international brand and give examples on melancholy in nordic rimes series.
