Abstract: The myth of the universal machine propels a specific universality. As models of interfaces, representation and engagements with media are standardized, established and entrenched, the dictum that 'software is never neutral' becomes an artistic and political ideology. This talk looks to make sense of musical-artistic works that I have developed over the past ten years. Beginning with the question of what kind of relationship is engendered by a traditional musical instrument, and the crisis of the virtuoso that lies at the heart of many critiques of electronic music performance; I will move on to discuss a post-virtuosic artistic practice and, more generally, how making one's own technical tools brings mediation to the forefront of poetics.

Bio: Jonathan Reus is a Dutch-American musician, multi-instrumentalist and new media artist. His work is strongly syncretic, borrowing and remixing multiple traditions of music performance and new media art, mathematics, and scientfic research. His artistic work is inextricably connected to a practice of research and curatorial work focused on staging open discourses between disciplinary boundaries.

Jonathan co-developed the Digital Media bachelors at the Institute for Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media at Leuphana University’s cultural studies department, where he created a practice-based pedagogical format crossing disciplinary boundaries between mathematics, informatics, history and cultural theory. He has lectured on the topic of performative sound and technological mediation at numerous art academies throughout the Netherlands and internationally.

Jonathan’s work has been performed at numerous prominent venues for music and new media art, including transmediale (Berlin), Hangar (Barcelona), STEIM (Amsterdam), Studio LOOS (The Hague), TodaysArt (The Hague), SPEKTRUM (Berlin), De Brakke Grond (Amsterdam), International Film Festival Rotterdam, Fabryka Sztuki (Łódź), MÓZG (Warsaw), Re-new (Copenhagen), STUK (Leuven), LIG Art Foundation (Seoul), APO33 (Nantes), Media Lab Prado (Madrid), and NK Projekt (Berlin).
