Repetition Trouble: A Picture Atlas of the Girl from Penelope Boothby to Greta Thunberg
Inspired by Georges Didi-Huberman's reading of Aby Warburg's art history with Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytical theory, this talk will seek to construct a picture atlas (Bilderatlas) of the girl as repeated both through the motif known as girl-in-a-mobcap and as a more enigmatic and troubling emotive formula (Pathosformeln). Tracing this repetition from the 1780’s and a portrait painting of Penelope Boothby to the present day and a portrait photography of Greta Thunberg I shall draw on Freud’s diagrammatic overview of an ordinary instance of repression – the famous case of the forgetting of the proper name Signorelli in The Psychopathology of Everyday Life (1905) – as a kind of model for my picture atlas of the girl.
