An informal and personal talk that remembers three extraordinary and otherwise forgotten improvisations. (1) Jimi Hendrix at the 1968 Woburn Pop Festival. (2) Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie at the 1980 San Sebastian Jazz Festival. (3) Miles Davis at the Royal Festival Hall, London in 1984. Each memoir will address different aspects of what I shall claim is an overlooked, unacknowledged and thus forgotten dimension of improvisation.
