Wednesday 23 October 2019,  at 16:00 - 17:30

It is not a coincidence that many of the cultural assets digitised by the Google Cultural Institute and displayed in their cultural aggregator, Google Arts & Culture, are the very artefacts originating from a violent process of extraction that resulted in the consolidation of empires and, among other events, in the encyclopaedic organisation and classification of the  “world-as-exhibition.”

Today, in the “world-as-a-digital exhibition”, data-prospecting is a consolidated practice of accumulation. Similarly to colonial bio-prospecting, economic power is deployed with the mission of exploring, scanning surfaces and details, and systematically searching for valuable resources, such as books, sculptures and paintings, that can be extracted as data (dataified), classified, and organised for future profit-making.

This is a lecture about documents, objects, .docs and .objs, bio-prospectors and data-prospectors, and the associated imaging and data-prospecting techniques used to render the political and geographic images and imaginaries displayed in the world-as-a-digital-exhibition.
