Students’ work selected to exhibit at Ars Electronica 2020

Commenting on the power and control of technology the artwork uses the framework of the game 4-Card Monte to explore how we as users are led to believe that we are in control only to find out the game is rigged… The work has been selected for showcase at Ars Electronica Festival.

Made by the first-year students from Digital Design’s bachelor program Sophia McCulloch, Mads Lindgaard, Jonas Paaske in the course Aesthetic Programming, Card Monte is an interactive program inviting the user to locate one of two red cards. Initially believing to be in control of the game the user quickly finds herself having lost all agency as something takes over only being able to passively watch as the cursor begins to move on its own initiative. The work is thus making visible the hidden power of the software we use regularly.

Card Monte has been selected for exhibition at the prestigious Ars Electronica Festival taking place 9.-13. September 2020 in Linz, Austria with this year’s title being The Wild State for the Kunstuniversität Campus activities. Premiering in 1979 the festival quickly developed into one of the world’s most important media art festivals. Furthermore, since 2002 the festival has intended to collaborate with international universities, including Aarhus University, and to exhibit the most outstanding work.
