Beginning September 1, 2024, the Centre for Critical Data Practices welcomes Mariam Khaled who in her PhD research will explore AI as a cultural and socio-technical construct
The Center for Critical Data Practices is pleased to welcome Mariam Khaled as a PhD student starting September 1, 2024. Her research project, currently titled Tongues of Artificial Intelligence, will examine how metaphors shape the public perception of AI, framing it as "thinking," "learning," and "dreaming" machines. This study will investigate how language and the way we talk about AI has influenced and is still influencing the societal integration of AI.
Supervised by Magdalena Tyżlik-Carver and Daniela Agostinho, Co-Directors of the Center, Mariam's work will deepen understanding of AI's cultural and technological impacts.
Mariam will also serve as a Research Assistant, at the Center.
