Meet the Interns: Lykke May Henriksen

The Recreational Fear Lab is delighted to host several research interns in the fall of 2025. In this post, lab intern Lykke Henriksen tells us about herself and her interest in the lab.

Hello! My name is Lykke. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in English at Aarhus University in 2024 and am currently enrolled in the Master’s degree programme in English at the same institution. This semester, I am very excited to be interning at the Recreational Fear Lab.

My horror journey, or so to speak, started in my teen years as my older brother and I began bonding over watching old school horror classics such as Child's Play and The Exorcist. We are still watching horror movies together to this day, and I have since broadened my horror palette. I particularly enjoy doing haunted houses and attractions, especially Dystopia’s haunted events, but I have also grown fond of and interested in horror literature. Although romance books will always be my favorite.

Recreational fear is never something I could have dreamt of being able to study; I always thought that horror was something my brother and I would watch, and that would be it. I never dreamt it would be something that I would be remotely interested in studying at all. Luckily, I have had the opportunity to dive more into horror during both my bachelor’s and my master’s, and I enjoy learning all the amazing things recreational fear can offer us. I am especially interested and fascinated by how horror can bring people closer together, as I have firsthand experienced with my brother and the poor souls who have joined me during a haunted house. Besides that, during my BA project, I grew interested in children’s effects in horror narratives, and I hope to look more into what horror narratives, in return, can offer children in my master’s thesis.

During my internship, I look forward to broadening my knowledge on recreational fear even more and especially sharing it with my amazing fellow interns!
