Meet the Interns: Gili Sercarz
The Recreational Fear Lab is delighted to host several research interns in the fall of 2024. In this post, lab intern Gili Sercarz tells us about himself and his interest in the lab.
Hey! My name is Gili Sercarz, I am currently doing an MA in the English department, and am excited to be an intern in the RFL.
I never really go into horror culture, not so much because of any real aversion to it, but more out of simply not getting around to it. I have watched my fair share of horror-comedy and horror-action films, and played a few video games with horror elements, but never really sought out anything that identifies primarily as horror. That said, I’ve been an avid consumer of genre and nerd culture for as long as I can remember, and, being a major force in that world, horror was always around me. Just… more in a ‘friend of a friend’ capacity, where you hang out with the same people all the time but never really meet on your own. So I’m excited for the opportunity presented by the lab to try and make my first genuine paces into horror.
In my studies I am very interested in the connection between literature and mathematics, and the possible contribution of psychophysiological experiments to literary studies. Wanting to learn more about the latter was my main motive for wanting to intern at the lab. I am looking forward to seeing the ‘behind the scenes’ of experimental research, and see how the theory and the reality meet in the middle of it all.
I am unsure if I’ll like horror more, less or at all once the internship is over, but I can’t wait to go and find out!
