Theory Lab: "The Eye of the Master: A Social History of Artificial Intelligence"
Wednesday 1 May 2024, 13-15
The lawn at Kasernen, Langelandsgade 139 (inside in case of really bad weather)
To shed light on the role of social relations and labour in shaping artificial intelligence, join us outside on the 1st of May 2024, at the lawn by Kasernen at Aarhus University. As we commemorate the International Worker's Day, we dedicate this theory lab to the examination of Matteo Pasquinelli's "The Eye of the Master: A Social History of Artificial Intelligence" (Verso, Oct. 2023).
Under the guidance of Asker Bryld Staunæs, our artistic-research PhD and steadfast techno-revolutionary, we will especially dissect and delve into "The Invention of the Perceptron," the book's final chapter. We focus on how Pasquinelli interprets the integration of images, perception, and vision within the collective individuation of general intelligence.
To set the mood and engage dialectical discussions, a crate of Red Tuborg will be on hand to accompany us. As with our previous labs, we encourage an open discussion, inviting fresh perspectives on the intrinsic theme of the book. Hence, don't hesitate to raise your thoughts and insights!
Bring your curiosity and a thirst for revolution. Everyone is welcome, though we kindly ask attendees to sign up in advance by accepting the calendar invitation or via email to Lotte Philipsen at lottephilipsen@cc.au.dk. You can also get a scanned copy of the last chapter on the Perceptron via e-mail.
If you don’t have access to the whole book, a reprint of the conclusion was recently published in the journal e-flux: https://www.e-flux.com/journal/141/577253/the-automation-of-general-intelligence/.
This theory lab is organized by AIIM, Centre for Aesthetics of AI Images at Aarhus University. We look forward to seeing all comrades there.
