Compositions for Sound and Movement

Workshop with Taku Sugimoto at Kunsthal Aarhus.

Info about event

Time

Wednesday 18 October 2017,  at 14:00 - 17:00

‘Taku Sugimoto has since the late 1990’s been a key figure on the Japanese improvised music scene. During the 2000’s, Sugimoto turned increasingly towards composition and its performance as his primary form of musical practice resulting in some of the most radically reductionist – and often silent – music ever composed. Apart from his prolific solo work, Sugimoto runs the Tokyo-based Slubmusic label and has collaborated with numerous artists both in- and outside of Japan such as Taku Unami, Masahiko Okura, Sachiko M, Radu Malfatti, Antoine Beuger, Manfred Werder and many more.

For the workshop at Kunsthal Aarhus on the 18/10, Sugimoto invites participants to discuss and perform a selection of his current compositional work in collaboration with the Japanese artist, Minami Saeki. The workshop will last from 14:00 - 17:00 and will actively engage with Kunsthal Aarhus’ current exhibition of Chinese artist Song Dong, My Home Is Your Stage.

Sugimoto himself writes of the workshop:

Compositions for Sound and Physical Movement

Some of my compositions don’t require any musical skill other than concentration, and are applicable not only to making sounds but also to making visual events or physical movement. I and Minami Saeki, who is also a dancer and choreographer, are arranging those compositions for the workshop so that the participants will have physical movement while making sounds.’
