Across three different ongoing studies, we are exploring under which conditions people trust chatbots. The three studies span political science, experimental psychology, and sustainability education. For each study, we have built a custom chatbot that our experiment participants engage with instead of more traditional interventions. The designs of our chatbots allow us to simultaneously shed light on existing disciplinary questions and to better understand what properties of chatbots make people regard them as trustworthy. We also consider the potential positive and negative implications of trust in chatbots.
