09:00-09:15 Coffee

09:15-09:30 Intro

09:30-10:10 Martin Zerlang: The Locomotive of History and Locomotives in the history of literature.
In the 19th century the locomotive rapidly becomes a highly important metaphor of “the metaphors we live by”, not least as a metaphor of time, history, direction. In literature – I’ll concentrate on Danish literature – the representation of locomotives (by writers such as Hans Christian Andersen, Georg Brandes, Herman Bang, Johannes V. Jensen, Emil Bønnelycke) can be read as instances of this metaphor at the same time as they reflect real changes in the history of the (Danish) railways.

10:10-10:50 Mads Anders Baggesgaard: Authoring Slavery
The presentation reflects on collaborations as historiographical method on th basis of experiences with intercultural/continental collaboration in a research project on narratives of slavery in Ghana

10.50-11:10 Coffee Break

11.10-11.50 Isabelle Torrance:

Working Across Different Centuries: Insights and Limitations
Drawing on my experience directing the ERC project on ‘Classical Influences and Irish Culture’, which spans the medieval period to the present day, this short talk will address the benefits and challenges of a longue durée approach. Using examples from the project’s research results, I propose some parameters for successful transhistorical study on a specific theme.

10:50-12.30 Annelis Kuhlmann
Dramaturgical reflections on period and periodization in history of theatre in Denmark and in theatre historiography

In this presentation I shall exemplify some of the challenges, I have encountered in the use of the notions period and periodisation in history of theatre in Denmark and in theatre historiography. I want to make sense of the two notions in a fragmentary and fluid context, using examples of famous contemporary theatre repertoire, created for Royal birthday celebrations at the Royal Danish Theatre at the very end of the 18th century. The examples represent artistic practices and topics, referring to crucial events in the dramatic history of the monarchy in Denmark. Eventually, the methodological problems become more complex, when, in a new political context, the decorations of these theatre productions were recycled for the first Danish production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Prinds af Danmark in 1813.

12:30-13.15 Lunch

13.15-13.30 Karen-Margrethe and Simona introduce workshop

13:30-15.30 Workshop on historical methods in groups

13:45-15:15 Presentation and discussion of groupwork

15:15-15.30 Round up

15:30-16:00 Drinks

looking forward to seeing you there!
All the best, Karen-Margrethe and Simona
