It is only a matter of time. Any minute now, anywhere, on every street corner, within every crowded place, it lures like a virus: the next terrorist attack. Anticipating this gloomy future, street furniture, concrete barriers, and flowerpots have been installed in public spaces in order to heighten security. Closing off, redirecting, and regulating the movement and speed of vehicles, blocks and barricades allow pedestrians to ooze through. In this lecture, we explore those spaces – vulnerable and securitized – that have materialized in response to the increased terror threat. Due to the terror threat's nature – especially that posed by the weaponization of vehicles – the lecture turns to concepts such as uncertainty and unpredictability as well as that of containment. The genealogy of security within the modern metropolis provides the backdrop of the analysis and guides the lecture as it investigates the temporality of urban counterterrorism today.

The seminar is public, and we welcome everybody.
