The focus of this course is to help participants (researchers at all levels at AU Arts) determine the appropriate type of test to use in different circumstances, and running/interpreting these tests using the R software. It will take place on two separate occasions, December 18 2017 and January 19 2018, from 9.30 to 15.30 in building 1481, room 341.

The first workshop on December 18 2017 will function as a sort of “brush-up” on basic statistics, exposing participants to a range of elementary statistical concepts and tests. The morning session of this event (taught by Roberta Rocca) will begin with a discussion of e.g. levels of measurement, populations and samples, normality, and the fundamental concept of statistical significance. The workshop will be very hands-on, so theoretical concepts will continually be applied through exercises in R that visualize them (you can bring your own data, but data sets will also be made available to you). In the afternoon, Katrine Rosendal Ehlers will introduce some of the most widely used bivariate statistics including correlation, simple linear regression, paired t-tests, one-way ANOVA (including model checking) and an introduction to chi²-tests.

The second event will be taught by Laura Winther Balling on January 19 2018 and the first topic of this workshop is different types of variables and their roles in sample research designs and in the participants’ own research. Based on this, we will discuss statistical vs. experimental control and analysis options for research questions that involve multiple variables and complex dependencies. This will lead to the focus of the workshop, which is on mixed-effects regression models: this type of analysis will be introduced and discussed, and we will go through an example analysis in some detail. The workshop will consist of a mixture of theoretical/conceptual and practical presentations, discussions, group work and exercises.

A third workshop will take place in June 2018 and focus on slightly more advanced statistical methods. (More detailed information will follow at a later date.)
