This represents a radical break with both conventional diplomatic practices and traditional displays of power. As a result, democratic principles are being eroded in favor of neo-authoritarian, even neo-absolutist, concepts of leadership. Using specific examples, this lecture aims to demonstrate how, starting with social media and its underlying logic, visual politics - and, by extension, political institutions and systems themselves - are currently undergoing transformation.

Wolfgang Ullrich was a long-time professor of art history and media theory at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design; he now lives in Leipzig as a cultural studies scholar and freelance author.
