New publication: Children´s life and play with the media

Children´s life and play with the media´ is about why we, as adult, need to engage ourselves in the way in which children are using the media.

A brand new iPad is neither the greatest wish, nor the primary need of any child. On the contrary, the greatest wish of all children is to have a positive relationship with their family, to have good friends, and to live in an environment that makes it possible for them to live, play and learn. However, in modern-day Denmark, living, playing and learning often takes place, either in correlation with the media or directly through the media. Therefore, it is essential to look at the role that the media plays in the lives of our children. What do children use the media for? And which meaning do children attribute to the media?

`Children´s life and play with the media´ is about why we, as adult, need to engage ourselves in the way in which children are using the media.

Stine Liv Johansen (born 1974) holds a PhD in media science, and has, throughout many years, been occupied with the way in which both young an older children use the media in everyday life. Her research focuses primarily on the play activities of children, as well as on the media as an inevitable part of childrens´s lives and play activities. Stine Liv Johansen is the author of the dissertation `viewers in Diapers – Young Children´s encounter with the media´, as well as of a number of articles on playing and media usage.
