Brazil, which has a history of intense slavery and immigration, is a vast country with approximately 210 million inhabitants, including many indigenous populations, and over 200 indigenous languages. However, many people believe that the only language spoken in Brazil is Portuguese, which functions as the only official national language in the country.

In this event, we will talk about languages spoken in Brazil, including several varieties of Portuguese, indigenous languages, African languages, immigration languages, as well as Brazilian sign languages. We will also discuss linguistic policies and language planning throughout the nation’s history, and the emergence of the Brazilian Portuguese language.

The event will take place on 2 May 2018, at building 1481 in room 239, and will be free of charge. Everybody interested in Brazil and its languages, cultures and societies is welcome.

Programme for the event can be found here.
