In his lifetime, Ravel was described by critics as an illusionist, conjurer, and magician of sound. This talk will examine the critical discourse concerning Ravel’s musical conjuring and identify specific illusory techniques in his music, including transformational ascents, priming, illusions of motion and perpetual ascent and—of course—harp glissandos. The pieces that will be discussed include the Concerto in G Major, Ma Mère l’Oye, Rapsodie espagnole, La Valse, and L’Enfant et les sortilèges.
