Professor in Global Media Industries 981355

The School of Communication and Culture invites applications for the position of professor in the field of media industries in a global perspective. The position is based at the Department of Media and Journalism Studies, which is part of the School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University.

The appointment is tenured and begins on 1 January 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
Globalisation and digitalisation of contemporary societies have entailed significant transformations in the media industry with significant ramifications to the production, distribution and consumption of media content. Part of this development has included the increasing importance of global media industries within specific media markets with pertinent implications for local, national, regional and transnational media cultures. The Department of Media and Journalism Studies wishes to strengthen its position within this research field, and is therefore seeking to appoint a professor with a particular interest in examining transformations in global media industries and their various ramifications and implications.

The successful applicant is expected to continually develop theoretical and methodological perspectives in media industry studies that reflect new global and technological challenges to the media industry. The successful applicant is also encouraged to attract internationally acknowledged researchers both with and without project funding who can take part in developing the field from various methodological and theoretical perspectives.

Applicants are expected to present their strategy for how they will contribute to the department’s research and education profile, including the way in which their research is relevant in an international perspective (see qualifications section).

The position as professor includes tasks and responsibilities in all of Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching and supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange.

Research
The successful applicant will have made significant contributions to research within one or more of the following areas:
  • global media industry players such as Google, Facebook, Netflix and Amazon, and how they challenge legacy media and small media markets
  • recent developments in transmedia production and distribution in a global media industry perspective
  • emerging modes of media policies and regulations across different socio-political contexts
  • media management and emerging business models in a global media industries perspective
  • trends in labour/craft conditions within creative and cultural industries.
The successful applicant is expected to take part in and lead major externally financed research projects, and to be a driving force in the development of new national and international research networks.

Teaching
The successful applicant is expected to collaborate with the department’s researchers, contributing at a high international level to course development in the field of media and/or journalism studies.

The successful applicant must possess supervision competences at all levels from BA to PhD, and must be actively involved in the development of courses and degree programmes. The successful applicant must be able to teach a number of courses on the BA and MA degree programmes in media studies, the MA degree programme in journalism, the MA degree programme in journalism, media and globalisation, and/or the supplementary subjects in journalism and film and media, respectively.

Applicants must indicate which of the courses at the department they would be able to teach and are encouraged to present their vision regarding curriculum development, teaching methodology and/or the future development of one or more degree programmes at the department. Given the increasingly international focus of the degree programmes, the successful applicant should be prepared to teach in English.

Talent development
The successful applicant will be expected to take part in the recruitment of PhD students, in developing and conducting PhD courses, and in promoting the academic development of junior researchers (PhD students, postdocs, assistant professors).

Knowledge exchange
Applicants are expected to take part in knowledge exchange with relevant media organisations and institutions as well as society as a whole in relation to any of the above-mentioned research areas.

The successful applicant will have excellent opportunities to engage in relevant collaborative initiatives with partners inside and outside Aarhus University.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in a field that is relevant to the position.

Applicants will be expected to document, relevant to the position:
  • significant research publications demonstrating an international research profile at the highest level within the field outlined in the invitation for applications. Publications (up to eight) must be submitted with the application;
  • a record of accomplishment in research management and in attracting external research funding;
  • a research plan that demonstrates how they can contribute to the department’s research and education profile, including the way in which their research is relevant in an international perspective;
  • excellent teaching and supervision competences from BA to PhD level as well as active contributions to the development of courses and study programmes. Applicants must indicate which of the courses at the department they would be able to teach;
  • strong competences in and commitment to supervision and career development of junior researchers (PhD students, postdoc students and/or assistant professors) as well as the development of PhD courses;
  • active participation in international research networks.
Furthermore, it will be considered an advantage if applicants
  • present their vision regarding curriculum development, teaching methodology and/or the future development of one or more degree programmes at the department, either in the application or in the teaching portfolio that is to accompany the application (see formalities section);
  • can document experience of knowledge exchange activities and participation in national and international councils, boards or committees.
The application must be submitted in English.

If the successful applicant does not speak Danish, he or she will be required to acquire sufficient Danish to participate fully in the activities of the School of Communication and Culture within two years of commencing the appointment.

Participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students. In order to maintain and develop the department’s excellent teaching and research environment, the successful applicant is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis, which will contribute to the School of Communication and Culture’s goal of establishing one of the best research environments in the Nordic countries.
