Assistant Professor in Media Textual Analysis at Aarhus University 979697

The School of Communication and Culture invites applications for the position of assistant professor in media textual analysis. The position is based at the Department of Media and Journalism Studies, which is part of the School of Communication and Culture.

The position of assistant professor is a three-year training position, after which there will be an opportunity to apply for a subsequent associate professorship. The appointment begins on 15 November 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, dedicated researcher and teacher and are therefore inviting applications for a position as assistant professor (adjunkt) in media textual analysis with particular emphasis on the analysis of media texts in a digital context.

A position as assistant professor includes tasks and responsibilities in all of Aarhus Universitys core activities within the areas of research, teaching and supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange.

Research
Applicants must submit publications that document research results at an international level and demonstrate strong methodological competencies in analysing media texts in a digital context. In addition to this, preference will be given to candidates whose work relates to one or more of the following:

- cross-/transmedia or cross-platform analysis
- genre studies
- user-generated content
- networked communication, for instance online conversation analysis or network analysis with respect to online communities, social media practices, shared and viral content etc.

The successful applicant is able to apply multiple analytical perspectives and to develop theory and methodology relevant to the position. Applicants should enclose a plan for their future research.

Teaching
The applicant will be expected to contribute to the development of Media Textual Analysis in the BA programme and at the same time be able to teach at least one other mandatory discipline in a degree programme at the department (for example the BA and MA degree programmes in Media Studies or the MA degree programme in Journalism). Please indicate which courses at the department you will be able to teach.

The successful applicant will be obligated to complete a course in university teaching devised especially for assistant professors.

Given the increasingly international focus of the degree programmes, the successful applicant should be prepared to teach in English.

Talent development
The assistant professor will be expected to develop his or her supervision capabilities at both BA and MA level.

Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant will be expected to exchange knowledge with various sectors of society outside the university, and to contribute to the general public debate in areas related to the position.

The successful applicant will have excellent opportunities to engage in relevant collaborative initiatives with partners inside and outside Aarhus University.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in media studies. Applicants must be able to document, relevant to the position

- a research profile demonstrating strong methodological competencies within media textual analysis. Publications (up to five) must be submitted with the application;

- a research plan for the next three years;

- the potential to develop research projects related to the advertised position;

- successful teaching at university level within media studies corresponding at least to the experience gained during a PhD degree programme.

The application must be submitted in English.

If the successful applicant does not speak Danish, he or she will be required to acquire sufficient Danish to participate fully in the activities of the School of Communication and Culture within two years of commencing the appointment.

Participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students. In order to maintain and develop the departments excellent teaching and research environment, the successful applicant is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis, which will contribute to the School of Communication and Cultures goal of establishing one of the best research environments in the Nordic countries.

About Media and Journalism Studies at AU
Research and teaching at the Department of Media and Journalism Studies is directed towards Danish and international media with emphasis on the interplay of the core fields of study: media institutions, media production, media texts and media use/reception, and the role of media in culture and society. The research at the department applies a wide array of theoretical and methodological perspectives to these fields of study, incorporating institutional, organisational, sociological and political perspectives, textual and aesthetic forms of expression, production circumstances, media use, media history and media theory.
