Postdoctoral fellowship Unearned Wealth A Literary History of Inheritance (1700-1850) 971773

In connection with the research project “Unearned Wealth – A Literary History of Inheritance (1600-2015)” at the Department of Comparative Literature and Rhetoric, Aarhus University, the School of Communication and Culture invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship (24 months). The appointment begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The research project “Unearned Wealth – A Literary History of Inheritance (1600-2015)” is supported by the Independent Research Fund Denmark for four years (2017-2021). The project studies inheritance as a socio-economic and cultural practice in modern England (and, to a lesser extent, France) through the analysis of narrative fiction. The study combines digital analysis of large literary corpora and critical historical interpretation of both longue durée developments and particular case studies.

The project is divided into three historical periods. One subproject (led by associate professor Jakob Ladegaard) deals with drama in the period 1600-1700, and another (led by PhD student Julie Kjær Markussen) with novels in the period 1850-2015. The postdoc fellowship for which we now invite applications will focus on English narrative fiction (novels and/or drama) from the period 1700-1850 with a particular emphasis on the 18th century and with the possibility of doing comparative studies of French fiction of the period. The postdoc fellowship is expected to result in 3-4 separate research articles (or a book manuscript of at least comparable length) on narrative fiction and inheritance in the period in question. The successful candidate is also expected to draw on and contribute to the over-all research activities and results of the collective project, as well as collaborating closely with the other project members.

The application should contain a research proposal for the postdoc fellowship, indicating clearly how this proposal will complement the research goals of the Unearned Wealth project. Descriptions of no more than three pages are invited.

A limited amount of teaching in the department as well as a limited amount of administrative work in relation to the project will be expected. The successful applicant must be willing to be based in Aarhus.

For further information on the research project, please see projects.au.dk/unearned-wealth or contact Associate Professor Jakob Ladegaard (litjl@cc.au.dk).
